As soon as we arrived, it was easy to see why Pahalgam is often compared to Switzerland. The landscape was stunning, with lush meadows, snow-capped peaks, and the calming flow of the Lidder River nearby. The fresh mountain air filled my lungs, and I immediately felt at peace.
Walking through Pahalgam was like stepping into a postcard. Every corner unveiled more breathtaking scenery, from towering mountains to expansive green fields. Whether you’re hiking, taking a stroll, or just soaking in the views, Pahalgam’s beauty is simply unforgettable. If you’re ever in Kashmir, this place is a must-visit!
Essentials to Carry
We dressed warmly, with gloves and hats, to ward off the mountain chill. A mini shoulder bag was perfect for carrying essentials like phones, passports, and cash. The convenience of the bag was highlighted during activities where it wasn’t in the way, especially on our horse ride through rugged terrains.
Arriving in Pahalgam
We reached Pahalgam around 1 pm, just a short 20 to 30-minute drive from Apple Valley (about 10 kilometers away). The road trip itself was a treat, with the scenic route offering spectacular views. On arrival, we were shown several spots to explore, each with its own entrance fee. After some friendly negotiation, we got a great deal and set off on our adventure.
Horse Ride Adventure
Our horse ride was the true highlight of the trip. Each of us was paired with a horse, given gumboots, and guided by friendly locals. At first, the ride was smooth and relaxing, but as we went deeper into the terrain, things got a bit intense. The horses sped up, navigating icy patches, mud, and puddles. It was exhilarating but also nerve-wracking at times!
Despite the tricky path, reaching Mini Switzerland was worth every moment. The name doesn’t do justice to the sheer beauty that unfolded before us. The lush greenery, framed by majestic mountains, made it feel like a magical place from a movie.
Safety Tips
During the ride, if you’re keen to take photos, it’s best to ask your horse guide for help. They’re more than happy to snap a few shots for you. Trust me, it’s safer than attempting selfies mid-ride! I learned this the hard way when I tried jumping off the horse for a picture—only to land in a pile of mud! Luckily, it wasn’t anything worse, but it reminded me to stay cautious.
Delicious Local Food
After the ride, we were starving and pleasantly surprised by the local food options in Pahalgam. Cozy restaurants and charming street vendors offered up delicious Kashmiri dishes. We treated ourselves to the famous Rogan Josh, a rich lamb curry that was perfect for warming us up.
We also tried Dum Aloo, spiced potatoes cooked in tangy gravy, and saffron-infused rice, a specialty of the region. For snacks, crispy samosas and tender kebabs were just right for a quick bite. And for dessert, we indulged in Gulab Jamun and Baklava—a sweet ending to a delightful meal.
SIFAR Restaurant
Before we left Pahalgam, we made one last stop at SIFAR Restaurant, located along the main road in the heart of town. This cozy spot, famous for being a shooting location for the Tamil movie LEO, had a relaxed ambiance and gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains.
Dinner at SIFAR
Dinner at SIFAR was the perfect way to wind down after a long day of exploring. The local flavors were on point, and the meal was delicious. After savoring our dinner, we made our way back to the hotel, feeling full and content from a day packed with adventure, beauty, and wonderful memories.
Our half-day in Pahalgam was a journey of discovery and joy, and we couldn’t wait to share our adventures with everyone!
