Vietnam is indeed very beautiful, but it’s also known for its scams. The country may not have enough financial stability to undertake larger projects, so many locals’ resorts to scams to earn a living. As travelers, it’s crucial to be cautious and aware of common scams. Here are some things to avoid in the capital city.
Be Aware of Booking Hotels
We encountered a very silly issue that had never happened to us before – an issue with hotel booking in this city. There were four colleagues travelling together. We had booked at one price on online apps, and upon arriving at the hotel, we were faced with a much higher price than what we had noticed before.
Those were very sad moments for us; we were tired and couldn’t rest. After that, the hotel management somehow accepted our online booking request before we arrived and forced us to pay this high price to stay. We became angry and complained to the online app. Unfortunately, we did not profit from this complaint. We then left the hotel and went to have lunch.
Subsequently, we searched for another hotel by walking around, avoiding the online server as we had noticed that online servers in their cities are often hacked for scamming purposes.
Limit of Contact
Be cautious when strangers approach you, especially those who try to befriend you too quickly. They might show you pictures of girls offering services as part of a scam. Ignore them and keep your distance.
Don’t Walk Alone at Night
It’s not safe to walk alone at night, especially in dark or deserted areas. There have been instances of people being robbed at knifepoint or gunpoint. Stay vigilant and consider taking a taxi or rideshare instead.
Beware of Massage Centers
Avoid going to massage centers, as they may overcharge you or provide subpar service. Some may demand extra money after you’ve already paid or refuse to provide service unless you pay more.
Avoid Pubs and Clubs
Foreigners are often targeted in pubs and clubs, so it’s best to avoid them altogether. The owners may try to scam you, and the environment may not be safe.
Exercise Caution
If you’re not skilled at negotiating prices, it’s best to avoid shopping in local markets. Even experienced negotiators can be cheated by sellers. Consider shopping at brand stores instead.
Check Your Change
Always count your change carefully when receiving it from shopkeepers or sellers. There’s a possibility they might give you less than what you’re owed.
