Driving License and Car Ownership in Cambodia | My Best Tips

If you are already an expert in driving, then you just need a Driving License in Cambodia. Yes, you heard correctly; you need to have a Cambodian driving license to drive here. It doesn’t matter if you already have an international driving license or one from another country.

If you don’t know how to drive, you will need to learn first, and then you can get a driving license in this country. So, if you don’t want to kill someone with your car, you must first become a driving expert. (Just kidding! 😂)

Learn to Drive

I have enrolled in a local driving school here for $110. Typically, the training takes 10 to 15 days if you can focus. However, if not, it may extend to 60 to 90 days. After the training period, they will also assist you in obtaining a driving license.

Driving License Process

Let’s know about the process of Driving License in Cambodia

1. I have paid $395 for the license.

2. After the payment, you have to prepare for the test with multiple-choice questions (MCQs). For preparation, you can use the CAMBODIA DRIVING RULES app (available for Android/iOS). After preparing, you can schedule the exam.

3. In an 8 am exam, you need to score a minimum of 35 out of 40 marks in the exam to pass. If you fail to achieve 35 marks, you will have one last chance for the exam.

Preparation involves studying 500 questions.

I have been guided by a local trainer who knows English very well and she is a good teacher. If you want her Telegram account, comment below, and I will send you an email with the details.

4. After passing the exam, they will take your driving test, and after passed all exam then you will have completed the requirements.

5. Typically, you can receive your license within 3 days.

If you are driving in Cambodia without a driver's license, you must keep at least $300 to pay the police if they catch you.

Purchasing a Car

You have completed everything related to driving. You have learned how to drive and also obtained the licence. So, now we need a car, right? Yeah, we do! Because after learning how to drive, it’s very painful to live without a car. This is my experience haha.

How to buy a car in Cambodia

You have to choose a model that is not older than 2015. Regardless of the brand or condition, do not opt for a model older than 2015. I am writing this article in 2024, so even after 2 years, you have to add 2015. In other words, after 2 years, you won’t buy a car that is older than (2015 + 2 = 2017 model). A decent car will cost at least $10,000.

Quick Travel Tips for Buying a Car

You may find a luxurious model like BMW, Mercedes, Audi, etc., at a very cheap price, which may have been your dream car once. However, purchasing such a car may lead to financial strain. As I have been emphasising from the beginning, avoid luxury and opt for the latest model with a robust engine. The brand doesn’t matter if you are not super rich. The engine of the car is crucial, and it’s a fact. Of course! You don’t want to visit the garage every week with this car, stressed. So, go for a car with a good engine. Example: If you are 27 years old and can run 1 kilometre per hour, don’t expect the same capability from a 55/60/70-year-old man.

I have also followed the same procedure, and after that, I bought a Mazda 2 Sedan (2017 model). From my personal experience, it’s a very good car with a reliable engine and excellent fuel efficiency. Although this car is not large, it is spacious enough for my needs.

So, that’s all,If you guys think that I need to explain more or if you have any questions, put them in the comments below. Thanks for being with me.
