Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem are neighboring islands, each with its own distinct vibe. I explored both during a 2-day trip, and here’s a breakdown of my experience.
Koh Rong
Koh Rong is where relaxation meets adventure. The peaceful atmosphere, crystal-clear waters, and beautiful scenery make it the perfect getaway. If you’re feeling burnt out from work or just need a break, this island offers the ideal escape. It’s my go-to place for unwinding—I’ve been there four times and it never disappoints.
Location
Both islands are located off the coast of Sihanoukville in the Gulf of Thailand.
- Koh Rong: Situated about 25 kilometers (15 miles) southwest of Sihanoukville, it’s the larger and more lively of the two islands. The beaches are pristine, the water is clear, and the vibe is energetic.
- Koh Rong Sanloem: Located 10 kilometers (6 miles) southeast of Koh Rong, this island is smaller and quieter. It’s perfect for a laid-back, peaceful escape.
Plan Your Trip
Pack the Essentials:
It’s sunny and warm on the islands, so pack light clothing, swimwear, and maybe a ball for some beach fun!
Speedboat Booking Process
For this trip, you’ll need to book a speedboat. I used Buva Sea for my ferry rides. They have two departure times: one at 8:00 a.m. and another at 5:00 p.m. You’ll get two tickets—one for the trip there and one for the return journey. You can confirm your return time later, depending on your plans.
While the speedboat experience was smooth during normal weather, rough seas can cause nausea, which happened to me on a stormy day. If the waves are high, be prepared for a bumpy ride and maybe some seasickness. But in calm weather, it’s a breeze!
Hotel Booking
Booking a hotel is simple, and online options can sometimes be cheaper. If possible, grab a sea-view room for the best experience. Here are my recommendations for different budgets:
- Luxury: Song Saa Private Island – Pure paradise with beachfront views and overwater villas.
- Mid-range: The Royal Sands Koh Rong – Comfortable rooms, a lovely pool, and beach access.
- Budget: Koh Rong Backpackers – Affordable and social, perfect for meeting fellow travelers.
- Eco-friendly: Treehouse Bungalows – Nestled in nature, this spot offers a unique eco-friendly experience.
- Simple: Island Palace Bungalows – Rustic, laid-back vibes just steps from the beach.
Dining Options
Koh Rong has something for everyone when it comes to food:
- Beachfront Restaurants: Fresh seafood and a mix of Khmer and international dishes with stunning ocean views.
- Local Eateries: Affordable street food offering authentic Cambodian flavors—think fresh spring rolls and grilled meats.
- Resort Dining: Many hotels have their own restaurants, ranging from casual bars to more refined dining experiences.
- International Cuisine: If you crave something familiar, there are places serving Italian, Thai, and Western fare.
Activities to Do
Most hotels can arrange activities for you. Some must-tries include:
- Beach Relaxation: Enjoy Long Beach (Sok San Beach) and Coconut Beach (Long Set Beach).
- Water Sports: Snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, and jet skiing.
- Boat Trips: Explore local fishing villages or try your hand at fishing.
- Jungle Trekking: Discover hidden waterfalls and breathtaking viewpoints.
- Bioluminescent Plankton: A magical experience at night when the plankton glows in the water.
Night Vibes
Koh Rong comes alive at night with beachfront bonfires, live music, and cozy beach bars. If you’re into parties, try to plan your visit for a Saturday night. It’s all about kicking back with a tropical drink and letting the island vibes wash over you.
For a quieter experience, take a peaceful moonlit stroll along the beach. The lantern-lit pathways and the sound of waves create a magical atmosphere.
Koh Rong Sanloem
While similar to Koh Rong, Sanloem offers a more peaceful environment. It’s perfect for couples or families seeking a quiet retreat. I visited Sanloem once and found it to be ideal for relaxation, though it doesn’t have the same array of activities as Koh Rong. If you’re visiting with friends, I’d recommend sticking to Koh Rong.
Is Koh Rong Safe?
Koh Rong is generally safe for travelers. The locals are friendly, and serious crime is rare. However, keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded areas or on the beach. When exploring more remote parts of the island or taking boat trips, make sure to follow safety instructions.
At night, stick to well-lit areas and avoid wandering alone until you’re familiar with the island.
Final Thoughts
If you’re planning a two-day trip, you can experience both islands—Koh Rong for its lively atmosphere and Sanloem for its peaceful beaches. Each island offers something unique, and together they make for an unforgettable getaway.
